Abstract
  • Candidates for membership in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors were surveyed. The degree to which candidates felt respected in the entrance process had a direct correlation with their anticipated levels of commitment to the organization (slope .71) and to the personal value they attached to the accomplishment (slope .48). The last group entering as members was compared with the first group containing those entering as member associates. Three-fourths of those who could chose the permanent category. Those who entered without facing in-person examination, but experienced collegial coaching toward career advancement, expected to show significantly higher levels of commitment behaviors.
