Abstracto

The number of church consultants has dramatically increased over the last quarter century, and an ecclesiastical self-help industry has burgeoned, promising 'church growth' and 'spiritual renewal.' This project considers one congregation's exercise in experiential learning, from within their context, that promoted the church's missional discernment and community life. Nine congregational members joined with the outside researcher to form a community-based action research team. This group's experience, which concluded with a report at variance with the congregation's historical and socio-cultural expectations, demonstrates the potential of action research to be a natural and revelational means to achieve intentional change in congregational culture.
