Abstract
  • Based on field research, this project examines the Thai spirit concepts of phii (pronounced 'pee'), including entities like malevolent/guardian/ancestor spirits and biblical demons. Northern Thai Christians provide insight into traditional and biblical phii and the project assesses the influence of traditional spirit concepts on biblical understanding. According to Thai Christian understanding, traditional phii and biblical demons are not related, but during Christian exorcism traditional concepts play an important role. Theological tradition influences understanding and practice regarding the spirit world.
