Abstract
  • CPE has emphasized psychology over theology in its approach to pastoral education. This approach has confused the pastoral identity of some students. The present study explores the use of religious history in clinical settings to clarify pastoral identity and enhance professional growth. A basic clinical unit was designed to make extensive use of religious history. The project influenced identity and development in the following areas: through the project students recognized the impact of their religious past upon their pastoral work; they developed objectivity toward their religious heritage that promoted change; and they acquired a strong sense of pastoral identity.
