- Abstract
- Underlying spiritual and social issues often cause pastors to move or change careers prematurely. This project examines these issues in order to find ways to prevent pastors from abandoning their call or congregations. Based on research in current literature, the project interviews pastors who have recently moved or left the ministry, and also surveys congregations they left behind. Several issues emerge, including burnout, professional isolation, inadequate education, unrealistic expectations, poor accountability, difficulties of institutional change, financial pressures, personal loneliness, spiritual conflicts, role overidentification, crisis intervention, overly generalized responsibility, and inadequate measures of performance.
