- The purpose of this study is to explore the phenomenon of church merger and consider variables which may influence the effectiveness of church merger. The study identifies the churches formed by merger in the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church between 1983-1998. Findings are compared with the results of a national survey of merged churches in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Church merger represents a way for congregations deep in decline to give up their lives, their identities, and physical manifestation in order to experience new life in a new body created by a miracle of God.
