- Abstract
- This project focuses on the leadership qualities that enable a predominantly maintenance-focused congregation to begin to look for ways to communicate the gospel to the unchurched community in which it exists. Thirty-seven pastors were interviewed who claimed to have changed their congregations from an inward to an outward focus. Twenty-six of these pastors came from thirteen different states and eleven from Finland, Sweden, and Estonia. Further understanding and insights were gathered from interviews with one Baptist, one Lutheran and one Methodist congregation. Analyses of the stories shared by pastors and lay people reveal the kinds of leadership required to change the focus of the local church.
