Abstract
  • This project addresses significant social and demographic changes occurring in the past 25-35 years that directly affect the shape of Christian ministry in the rural Ozark Mountains region. Based on demographic data, interviews with long-term residents, and responses to a survey of more than 900 area pastors, the project proposes six strategies for ministry: relocate congregations to regional centers; expand the geographic scope of ministries; target ministries to specific groups of migrants and to a culture that is increasingly urbanized; develop biblical models of community within local congregations; target needs of those affected by changing economic patterns; and target adolescent drug abuse and pregnancy with prevention, intervention, and discipleship programs.
