Abstract
  • This thesis explores using a ritual recognizing divorce to provide ministry to divorced persons. The criteria to measure this are theological soundness, liturgical consistency, and pastoral effectiveness. This study includes an overview of cultural and church responses to divorce, a comparison of Catholic and Lutheran theologies of marriage, an exegesis of biblical divorce texts, a local study assessing participants' evaluation of a ritual experience, and a theological discussion applying a theologia crucis and the law and gospel paradigm to the issue. The study concludes that a ritual of blessing meets the criteria; and pastors can utilize it confidently with divorced Christians.
