- Abstracto
- In the light of changing Canadian culture, decreasing church attendance, inherent shortcomings of institutionalized attractional models of church, and the challenges of planting conventional, building-based churches in the postmodern context, this thesis project delineates criteria for developing effective missional models of church for the 21st century. To furnish a biblical foundation, the project follows the movement of the first century church from the temple to the house described in the Lukan narrative. Twelve elements of apostolic mission from Luke 10-11 are incorporated into a church-planting model that connects with the households of our day - pre-existing relational networks of people meeting in third places. This biblical model reproduces organically, without depending on a church building, hierarchical structures or paid clergy. It presumes a profound reorientation of ecclesiology around the missio Dei so that mission shapes structure. The author describes specific examples of houseold church planting and applies the model to Hills Church, a house church in Thornhill, Ontario.
