- Abstract
- This dissertation provides a design for abortion education and conversation in a church context. Using the 'shared praxis approach' to religious education developed by Thomas Groome, the design enables participants to examine a spectrum of abortion perspectives, to compare their personal perspectives with this spectrum, and to grow in understanding of the biblical and theological themes of each. The design was field-tested in a number of Presbyterian churches as a short-term (four one and a half hour sessions) adult education course. The author trained volunteer leaders to manage the educational process. A detailed course outline is included in the dissertation. Though consensus about abortion may never occur, abortion education using a 'shared praxis' approach helps create new levels of awareness and understanding. Such understanding opens the door for ministries of service to persons affected by the complex dimensions of the abortion issue.
