Abstract
  • This project examines the contributions of older African American women and their vital presence in their churches and communities. The process of 'faith story-sharing,' a methodology designed to enable older adults to recall, share and celebrate their individual faith journeys, is introduced and utilized to allow elders to explore the meaning of their life stories in relationship to the biblical story and their identity in their communities. The author researched current life review and reminiscence methods and then developed a unique process that differs in three distinct ways: faith story-sharing is (1) faith-based, (2) a communal experience, and (3) honors the cultural and religious traditions of older African American women. This process was used as the basis of two retreats with women from several congregations.
