Abstract
  • The pastor, the church staff, and the congregation are often poorly equipped in understanding and ministering to the seriously mentally ill (schizophrenia, unipolar and bipolar depressive disorders) and their families. The author, from research and personal experience, offers pastoral care guidelines in understanding the illness, in identification of the mentally ill, and in ministering to the mentally ill persons and their families. Using Scripture and recent medical research the writer contends that serious mental illness is a no-fault bring disease and should be treated medically, emotionally and spiritually as any other chronic medical disease.
