Abstract
  • The hospital chaplain is challenged with expectations for measurable goals and yet works with situations of intense meaning and sacred activity that are immeasurable, This thesis asks the chaplain to not see these as separate but to integrate the language of medicine and of the organization (numbers) with the language of the sacred (symbols). The author carried out projects with nurses, key partners with chaplains in patient care, to develop pathways to the sacred. The author concludes that measures are an important way to demonstrate effectiveness in the organization and also provide these pathways to the sacred.
