Abstract
  • An evaluation of the effectiveness of a nine-day Home Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention orientation for 23 church planter apprentices and spouses was attempted by analysis of three psychometric instruments administered at the beginning and at the end of the orientation. Statistical analysis indicated no change; however, both the pre- and post-test scores of the participant apprentices resembled very closely those of previously successful church planter apprentices. Analysis of the information generated by questionnaires via telephone interviews indicated the orientation produced positive change, both hypothesized and additional. Greater sophistication in statistical design is recommended to obviate the artifacts inherent in pre- and post-test designs and to validate objectively the traditional subjective questionnaire evaluations in order to provide more effective support for missionary personnel.
