Abstract
  • The author developed a paradigm of spiritual leadership to be utilized by senior Christian chaplains preparing Christian chaplains to accompany U.S. Marines into a combat environment. The author interviewed Marines and chaplains who had served in combat to describe the vocational particulars of the chaplains' ministry, and identified spiritual practices that sustained chaplains spiritually in their ministry. The author develops a four-part paradigm of spiritual leadership; (1) knowledge of vocation, (2) assent, (3) trust expressed in prayer, and (4) community; as a guide in spiritually preparing chaplains. The author uses the phrase paracletic military ministry to describe the chaplains' calling.
