- Abstract
- Effective storytelling in the Divine Liturgy (parish preaching and proclamation) and in the liturgy after the Liturgy (crisis intervention on the streets) enables listeners in crisis to remember, reconcile, and experience redemption. The Introduction explains the writer's discovery of using stories in preaching and critical incidents, which led to the thesis and project. Chapter One begins with an understanding of the use of story in preaching. Story finds its power in shared human experience. The narrative inductive art form of preaching is explored. The flexible application of the narrative method is relationally experienced. It addresses the fractures encountered in life, the loops we are thrown into, and the God who delivers us. Chapter Two presents an introduction to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and the understanding of the CISM principles. This chapter examines crisis, CISM techniques, models of crisis intervention and the use of story in crisis intervention. Chapter Three defines the three functions of story: remembering, reconciling, and redeeming. This chapter introduces the 3 R's paradigm model through the use of story in preaching and crisis intervention. Examples illustrate the paradigm's effectiveness in preaching and crisis intervention. Chapter Four describes and presents the workshop. The workshop brought preachers and crisis interventionists together to enhance their use of story in their respective fields. Included in the appendix is the workshop handbook. This chapter assesses both qualitatively and quantitatively the effectiveness of the workshop. Chapter Five is intended as an article which summarizes the importance of story and introduces the 3 R's paradigm in preaching and crisis intervention.
