Abstract
  • This project, which is a ministry tool, began with the establishment of the Standing In The Gap Institute (STING) and funding for six week Environmental Education and Literacy 2005 program for inner city District of Columbia public school 9th-10th grade youth. This was continued through two additional programs funded for 4th grade students and physically and mentally challenged adults. This ministry has grown to encompass ecological and economic resource projects that take place at the Agricultural Experimental Station, University of the District of Columbia, Muirkirk Research Farm, Beltsville, Md. The 2007 project had two components: (1) A study of the Amaranth plant (Pigweed) for a possible 'niche' market; and (2) The study and removal of invasive species with the protection and restoration of native species. The data from these projects were transmitted to District of Columbia educators via the WESS Teachers' Training Institute located at the Agricultural Experiment Station.
