Abstract
  • The central thesis of this paper is that one's spiritual growth can be significantly enhanced through the experience of reading poetry. This thesis is developed both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the paper reflects exploration into the meaning of spirituality as defined by Paul Tillich and David Steindl-Rast, coupled with the adaptation of a spiritual reading methodology, lectio divina. The paper also establishes the dialectical relationship of poetic language and theological language. Practically, the paper reports the preparation and evaluation of six workshops designed to facilitate spiritual growth through reading a variety of poetry.
