Abstract
  • The research project is a qualitative study based on pastoral care visits with hospice patients. The data was gathered through a spiritual assessment tool and unstructured interviews with terminally-ill persons and their families. The author found that frequent interventions benefited the hospice patients through forming a trusting relationship with the hospice chaplain. This relationship enabled a deeper exploration of spiritual and religious need of the terminally ill. Six case studies explore the spiritual pain related to the five stages of dying and the spiritual tasks connected with those stages.
