- This paper is an exploration of the relationship between faith and recovery from trauma. It is based on interviews of six women and two men, aged 30 to 50, who are survivors of childhood abuse. This study indicates that beliefs which are most conducive to recovery are those that affirm the survivor's own goodness and power. In terms of God image, the most significant shift was from an external God-person to an internal God-experience. Several religious themes were examined including: suffering, free will, evil and forgiveness. Those beliefs which affirmed freedom of choice and responsibility were most helpful to recovery.
