Abstract
  • This project encourages laypersons to become more deliberate and discerning in relating what is proclaimed in a sermon to their daily lives. The project enlists church members in intentional involvement with sermons before, during, and after worship, individually and in groups. Participants prepare for a sermon, focus their listening with questions during the sermon, respond to the sermon in an experiential rather than homiletically critical way in small groups meeting with the preacher, and continue consideration of the sermon in journal questions for several days afterward. These responses help preachers to understand the perceptions and insights of listeners.
