Abstract
  • This study is an inquiry into how Southern Baptists view their own pastors who suffer a divorce. The research was intended to show trends and attitudes. The study began with the premise that Southern Baptist theology and praxis holds a rigid view of divorce when applied to pastors and fails to allow for divorce for any cause other than adultery. The research consisted of interviews, letters, questionnaires, books, articles, and tapes. The study was limited to the preaching pastor only. Respondents as a consensus offered little encouragement to the divorced pastor returning to the pulpit. There was a strong indication that pastors in the Southern Baptist Convention are taking a more moderate view toward divorced persons in their congregations. This is the only document that records the written views of so many SBC leaders on the subject of divorce.
