  • Different words used in the New Testament describe various roles a preacher can take on and could necessitate different starting points for preaching as either the text or the audience. By surveying sermons given by preachers in the New Testament, modern literature on the subject of preaching, and personal interviews with eight seasoned preaching pastors, the conclusion was reached that a preacher's perceived primary role does not affect their starting point in preaching. Instead, other factors, such as education, pastoral intuition, and size of audience, affected a preacher's starting point, which often was the audience rather than the text.
