Abstract
  • The thesis question is 'How can a study of Reformed spirituality enhance the life of a member of a PCUSA congregation?' The answer to this question has its roots in both the Old and New Testaments and is played out for us in the historic development of spirituality from the early Desert Fathers, through the Reformation, and into our present time. The focus of this work is that when these areas of study and discovery are opened the average member's spiritual life benefits and the member experiences a closer relationship with the Lord. Analysis of the issue is based on surveys of those who participated in an eleven week course of study covering the development of spirituality and the disciplines historically associated with spirituality. An emphasis is placed on the change in the understanding of spirituality brought about by the Reformation.
