Abstract
  • This dissertation/project contains a handbook for a self-guided study of three representative Updike novels, The Centaur, Couples, and A Month of Sundays. After an introduction to Updike's style, concerns and theological positions, the author helps the reader make a detailed explication of the novels so the reader can experience the theology found in them. Updike's theology--which is experienced rather than stated overtly--is useful in a culture which doubts dogmatics. A Prolegomena gives some original ideas about story as theology and surveys a few theologians' involvement with storytelling.
