Abstract
  • This project seeks to identify factors that contribute to a female adolescent's inability to appropriately express anger and to identify what may be helpful in dealing with this inability through pastoral counseling. After discussing anger, especially the affect theory of Silvan S. Tomkins, it presents traditional undertandings of adolescent development and identifies new findings regarding female development, beginning with the work of Carol Gilligan. A case study provides a view of specific clinical work with a female adolescent struggling to speak her anger. The pastoral counseling relationship becomes a safe place for mutual exploration of issues involved in integrating anger as a life-giving affect.
