Abstract
  • The Uniting Church in Western Australia (Congregational, Methodist, Presbyterian) suffers from an identity crisis caused by vague understandings of the biblical and theological reasons for union, and its mission in social justice, evangelism and ministry within a materialistic and secularized society. The study examines the crisis, the denomination's historical and social origins, basis of union, and current mission strategies. Acknowledging that the church's identity is only beginning to emerge, the author commends the denomination as an improvement on the past and suggests ways of dealing with grief and other problems which hinder mission effectiveness.
