Abstract
  • The district superintendent is supervisor for pastor-parish relations committees and pastors of local congregations. Events designed by the Portsmouth District Superintendent, Virginia Conference, The United Methodist Church, placed him as the catalyzing agent for eleven congregations working through pastoral change: termination, transition, start-up, and six-month evaluation of a new pastor. This document is part of a larger design setting the superintendency as the bonding agent of denominational vitalization. The experiment results in a deepening appreciation for the connectional system as district superintendent, pastor-parish relations committee, and pastor together seek a vision for ministry at the time of changing ministerial leadership.
