  • The purpose of this study was to design, implement, and evaluate a training process for pastors in the Southern New Jersey Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church which would help develop their visionary leadership awareness. This training process did not intend to impart vision to pastoral leaders, but did attempt to ignite a desire in each participant to seek a personal and corporate vision for ministry and provide understanding on how to become visionary leaders for twenty-first century ministry. Twenty pastors were selected to participate in a regimen of entrance and exit interviews, two training seminars, assigned reading, and spiritual disciplines. Participants were selected based upon the following criteria: five or more years of ministry experience; full or part-time; and appointed to church ministry within the Southern New Jersey Annual Conference. Data analysis focused predominately upon responses made during entrance and exit interviews, as well as the researcher's observations during seminars and participants' written evaluations. Major findings include: (1) visionary leadership training process is feasible for traditionally trained clergy; (2) transition from management to leadership paradigms requires a commitment to lifelong leadership development; (3) vision and leadership awareness can be increased; (4) spiritual disciplines are essential for Christian visionary leadership; and (5) transitioning clergy must find support among themselves and their connectional system. This research addresses the integration of a theological understanding of vision, spiritual disciplines, and leadership development. Through a twelve-week prescribed course of spiritual discipline, two seminars on vision and transformational leadership, biblical and theological teachings, and assigned reading, participants were confronted with a new paradigm of pastoral leadership. This dissertation describes how a select group of clergy were challenged and responded to this visionary leadership training process.
