Abstract

Can spiritual direction with imprisoned people enable them to recognize that they are in a personal relationship with God which helps their human freedom to develop in a way that affects their lives? the objectives of the project were: 1) to involve persons incarcerated in a state prison in spiritual direction; 2) to help them discover that they are in personal relationship with a God who loves them unconditionally; 3) to enable them to discover that profound human freedom can issue from such a relationship; and 4) to note and critique the impact that this kind of relationship has on the person's sense of self, the person's choices about his/her life and the person's relationships with others. The author anticipated that the focus of spiritual direction on developing a personal relationship with God would effect a new sense of personal freedom and an ability to consider options and make decisions to change one's lifestyle and the course of one's future. To help keep that focus this paper includes a description of the prison situation and lifestyle, as well as a definition of personal relationship, freedom, religious experience and contemplative attitude.
