Abstract
  • This thesis begins in the first chapter by outlining the need for listening training, highlighting its necessity as a part of the communication process. Two issues--the nature of God's Word and the nature of men and women as listeners--supply the theological foundation for listening to biblical preaching or teaching, which is discussed in chapter two. A third chapter surveys the literature of listening, noting especially the limited contributions of sacred writers in contrast to the extensive resources available from secular perspectives. The work includes several tools to help pastors and churches who would like to train their people in listening. These include a discussion of preaching on listening, along with several sermons; a small group study on listening to preaching; and a three hour listening seminar. The final chapter provides a summary of what the author learned through this study and suggestions for training church members in listening. This work proposes that training church members in effective listening has the potential to significantly improve the reception and application of God's Word in people's lives.
