Abstrakt

Creation of a mission statement by a local congregation establishes a foundation for effective ministry through the development of a doctrinal understanding that perceives the nature of the church and its mission as evolving from God's grace. Research involves the gathering of local church history, social information, and demographics. A study series on the nature of the church and its mission, developed and implemented by the pastor, is presented to a group of laity. At a retreat the laity give formation to the statement, which receives congregational adoption. Questionnaires help analyze the laity's beliefs about the nature of the church and its mission. Evaluations appraise the project's content and process and the leader's performance. Implications for ministry include the statement's sense of action, laity language, and reference point for ministry.
