Abstract
  • A need exists for Lutheran worship rites to employ indigenous musical materials and texts which speak to the life experience of rural worshipping communities. The project cites historical precedent (the Pentecost festival) for the reshaping of pre-existing traditions to meet new and contemporary worship needs. A combination of historical and biblical research as well as personal interviews with farm families leads to the formulation of a quarterly, seasonal congregational celebration using a modified form of responsive prayer and folk-song paraphrase setting of Holy Communion. Specifically assigned lessons, confessions, and prayers are included.
