Abstract
  • Church leaders are increasingly convinced of the vital role of practices in shaping the life and mission of congregations in North America. This project examines how certain practices influence the congregation's subsequent hearing of the sermon. Rooted in the cultural-linguistic theory of religion, the author briefly critiques traditional reformed homiletics and presents preaching as one practice in a network of practices. The project examines discussions by groups in the author's congregation who engage in specific practices, and discloses the way participation in these practices prepares these groups to hear, comprehend, and appropriate the message of related sermons.
