- This paper by an ordained psychotherapist presents one facet of the on-going integration of depth-psychological theory with pastoral practice. It focuses on the Shadow, an aspect of human nature and a source of difficulty for the Christian church which has not been dealt with realistically. Jung's concept of the Shadow is examined. Examples of the operation of the Shadow include: the Iranian hostage crisis, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, the moral majority, the Ku Klux Klan. A biographical incident is recounted. The traditional anti-Shadow position of the Christian church is described, with examples of theological, doctrinal, moral-ethical, liturgical and architectural over-emphasis on the white-bright-light side. The consequence of over-valuing of purity is described: a repressed Shadow which operates secretly from the unconscious, producing various unwholesome effects. A theological-psychological model relating Shadow and Christ envisions the 'ultimate context' within which each unique therapy unfolds. Through 'crucifixion', neurotic suffering due to one-sided development can be transformed into religiously meaningful suffering.
