Abstract

A study guide on the history of hymnals in the Methodist tradition was written to improve the acceptance of the 1989 hymnal. Questionnaires were given before and after the use of the study guide to test its effectiveness. The questionnaires studied a wide range of factors, from social attitude to church involvement. They also examined attitudes toward the denomination and its leadership. The factors that tend to correlate with rejection of the new hymnal are: white, male, irregular worship attender, and non-committee member. The study guide produced very limited positive results.
