Abstract
  • Grace Brethren churches in America exist in tension created by conflicting forms of church government. A collision of congregational freedom and denominational control has created turmoil and widespread schism on at least two occasions in the past 100 years. Two case studies of historic Progressive Brethren churches offer potential solutions to this continuing problem. Carefully designed governing documents are recommended to the denomination at three levels: the local church, district 'clusters' of churches, and the national Fellowship.
