Abstract
  • Implementation of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and other experimentation with initiation rituals in the United States are discussed in relation to the fundamentals of initiation as found in traditional cultures. The RCIA is thereby identified as a transformative initiation process. After a discussion of the shifting American cultural context and a socio-historical overview of Christian initiation, the scriptural notion of the Pentecost Christian community is related to the demands of the RCIA text and the ecclesial models of Avery Dulles. Finally, a new model of the parish as an initiating community is proposed to pastoral leaders.
