  • This thesis addresses preaching as a tool for inviting a multicultural congregation into deeper koinonia, particularly in times of conflict. The context of this project is a Presbyterian congregation in Chicago which includes African immigrants, African Americans, Euro-Americans, persons with chronic mental illness and those whose quirkiness has avoided medical detection. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'. Through interviewing active members, exploring scripture, reflecting theologically and homiletically, and telling stories of congregational life, the author invites preachers and pastors to release their own predetermined agendas for the multicultural church in order to make space for God to create spiritual home for all people.
