  • The thesis of this project is a process of spiritual formation towards intimacy with God is an essential discipline that churches must provide for congregants to survive and thrive during times of distress and suffering. The research concluded congregants feel the church offers support during periods of suffer; however, a longing for the engagement in intimate discussions on the topic of suffering and spiritual well-being is evident. Based upon information gathered, the author believes utilizing the writings of Howard Thurman along with other writings for a program will assist congregants in viewing their suffering from both a practical and spiritual angle.
