Abstract
  • Chronic pain impacts the life and ministry of countless preachers. By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, examining the Scriptures, including Paul's thorn in the flesh, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers who themselves battle chronic pain, the author identifies some common challenges and unique opportunities that those who preach in pain face as they seek to minister effectively. The preacher's call, his character and his task in ministry are discussed, concluding that when rightly understood, chronic pain is itself a gracious gift of God that He uses to form the preacher, and through the preacher, others.
