Abstract
  • Historically, there has been a difference of opinion, conflict, and controversy concerning a woman accepting her call to ministry across denominations. Many churches point to certain scriptures to undergird and provide support for gender prejudice in the rejection of a woman’s call to ministry. This research project will consist of a quantitative and qualitative framework. I will investigate various scriptures used against women and other scriptures that provide evidence that God calls women to preach the gospel, and I will conduct interviews with mid- and late-career women clergy. I argue that some scriptures have been taken out of context to push a false narrative intended to silence a woman’s call to ministry, past and present. The results I hope to discover will show that through discussing causes and challenges that arise for female clergy due to gender prejudice and sharing the reflections of the call and experience in ministerial leadership from mid- and late-career women clergy, it will be possible to educate, identify important areas of support for, and encourage early-career female clergy to inform the development of a mentoring network across denominations. History serves as a valuable lesson from which women clergy can draw to aid themselves as they battle against gender prejudice.
