- Abstract
- A Program of Training and a Training Manual for Religious Lay Leaders Within the United States Marine Corps (hereinafter referred to as Program of Training and Training Manual) is central to Part I and is presented within Part II without footnotes and references. Details of motivation, inception of and planning for this Program of Training and Training Manual, its theological basis and issues, documentation, and evaluation for use, compose the contents of Part I. The acceptance and use of the Program of Training and Training Manual by the Marine Corps is an issue that will be handled separately from, and is not a part of, this project. The Program of Training and Training Manual included in Part II were composed without footnotes or references with the intent of enhancing its acceptance and use as a practical tool for ministry by Command and chaplains within the Marine Corps. The Program of Training and Training Manual are the results of personal faith and experience, academic research, professional consultation, and colleague cooperation and support. As such, the approach is unique in that nothing similar to this has been attempted, and materials and statistics within the military are either short on supply or simply not available. The method used, therefore, was based upon personal faith, commitment, experience, observation and reflection. To this added the theoretical, theological, and academic which gave shape to the Program of Training and Training Manual. The initial perceptions upon which this project was based were derived solely from the practical exercise of ministry within a military environment of religious pluralism.
