- This qualitative study explores how social science contributes to Christian ministry. Principles and insights of the action science model developed by Argyris and Schon (1974) and the ideas of Wenger on informal 'communities of practice' (1998) undergird three ministry-based explorations. A Practicum group, a Roman Catholic group and an Elementary School Faculty were tested for evidence of a community of practice and any personal or communal transformations. The results demonstrate that communities of practice do exist in religious settings and can be a seedbed for emerging practices and that action science provides tools to complement existing religious disciplines.
