Abstract
  • The problem addressed by this project is the difficulty for a minister in providing effective pastoral care and counseling when his or her church reaches 'program size,' having a total Sunday morning attendance of 150 to 400. The thesis is that this growth requires a shared ministry of pastoral care and counseling. This project uses interviews with ministers and congregants in Unitarian Universalist churches of this size in Southern California but could be adapted to churches of other sizes and faith traditions. The content is also viewed through both theological and ethical lenses, giving it integrity beyond strictly pragmatic applications.
