Abstract
  • More effective pastoral ministry, particularly among American Baptists, is contingent upon clearer understanding of and agreement concerning a priori expectations involved. Three primary sources of expectations are surveyed: the scriptures, Baptist traditions, and contemporary Baptist expectations concerning pastoral ministry. A profile of contemporary expectations is available through international research reported in Ministry in America (1980). Research among Mid-American Baptists by the author corroborates the international results. The ranked-performance characteristics profile of Ministry in America is suggested as a starting point for understanding and developing consensus concerning real expectations for effective pastoral ministry.
