- Abstract
- With the increase in DUI (driving under the influence) arrests, the relationship between DUI offences and alcoholism, and the public outcry and concern for the dangers, injuries, and deaths caused by drunk drivers, the local ministerial association with the cooperation with the Twenty-third District Judge designed and implemented an eight-week trial ecumenical DUI program. Since spirituality has been shown to be a significant factor in recovery, this program was designed with two prongs: instruction (10 one-hour sessions) and community service (35 hours), which provided ways to enhance the DUI participants' spiritual well-being. The ecumenical aspect enhanced the program by broadening the base of community support, which in turn offered the DUI participants a collective positive response from the community of faith.
