Abstract
  • The author proposes that the church, through its Christian formation processes, can prepare young people to respond responsibly to the incivility and violence they encounter in their communities. Using methods anchored in best practices, the young people in her congregation were taught peacemaking skills over a period of 12 weeks. At the conclusion of the formal program, the young people demonstrated they were acquiring both an understanding of the relationship between power dynamics and violence and the skills that are helpful in diffusing the potentially violent situations they encounter in their schools and communities.
