Abstract
  • This project investigates the utility of the doctrine of the 'priesthood of believers' as a useful concept for ministry among laypersons in a local Lutheran parish. Most members associate 'priest' with Roman Catholicism and 'minister' with 'anyone in God's service,' but both words have a formal, ecclesiastical connotation for most members without reference to a common priestly ministry of every Christian. Even those members most deeply involved in ministry feel little personal identification with 'priesthood.' Congregations need to encourage calls and conditions that provide for expression of the priesthood of all believers.
